Overview

Our recent design workshop utilized a card-based tool to explore values in Human-Food Interaction (HFI) through a Value-Sensitive Design (VSD) approach. Experts from various fields, including design and gastronomy, collaborated in pairs to analyze and categorize values using a set of specially designed cards. These cards, based on interview data, facilitated discussions on core values, new values, and value conflicts, helping participants generate innovative, value-driven design ideas. Through interactive sessions, brainstorming, and reflective evaluations, participants assessed their ideas against a universal value framework, fostering a deeper understanding of value-driven design in HFI.

Agenda

Objective
Refine the card-based design tool and generate design solutions with interdisciplinary input.

Duration
4 hours

  1. Welcome & Introduction (15 minutes)

    • Welcome and overview of the workshop objectives.

    • Brief introduction to VSD and HFI.

  2. Presentation of Refined Card Design (20 minutes)

    • Explanation of the updated card components: utterance cards, value cards, value type stickers, and HFI phase icons.

    • Demonstration of how to use the cards.

  3. Hands-On Session: Assigning Value Types and Categorizing Values (60 minutes)

    • Participants work in interdisciplinary teams to categorize utterance cards using value-type stickers and value cards separately

    • Participants placed the appropriate utterances under the value card based on their perception

    • Discussion and feedback on the usability and clarity of the cards.

    Break (15 minutes)

  4. Problem Definition and Ideation (90 minutes)

    • Teams identify key problems based on categorized values and HFI phases.

    • Brainstorm and develop potential design solutions to address identified problems.

  5. Group Presentations and Evaluation (60 minutes)

    • Each team presents their findings and proposed solutions.

    • Evaluation of solutions using Schwartz’s "Dynamic Underpinnings of the Universal Value Structure" diagram.

  6. Conclusion and Next Steps (20 minutes)

    • Summary of key insights and feedback.

    • Outline of the next steps for further refining the card-based design tool.
